Estrus Detection

Next Page

Detecting standing estrus, or heat, is probably the best way to estimate when ovulation occurs and the egg is released for fertilization.

Every known open sow or available gilt should be heat checked using a boar (if available) everyday. Estrus detection is the single most important part of a successful A.I. program.

Females approaching or in estrus will exhibit various signs that will help you detect estrus, both physiological and behavioral signs.

Physiological Signs

Swelling / Reddening of vulva —The vulva may appear swollen and red. This is more pronounced in gilts and may not occur or be distinguishable in sows.

Mucus discharge — A fairly thick, sticky secretion may appear in and on the opening of the vulva. This may be present only for a short time and may easily go unnoticed.
